Hours: 0-40 hours per week
Typical Referral: 10-15 hours per learner per week
Pay: £25-£35 per hour

About the Role

We are looking for experienced SEN tutors to provide tailored one-to-one tuition to secondary-aged learners in Bromley.

The students you will work with may be unable to attend mainstream education due to a range of additional needs or barriers. This could include SEND, anxiety, SEMH needs, disrupted education, school avoidance or significant gaps in their learning.

As an outreach tutor, you will provide a flexible and personalised approach to education, adapting your lessons around the individual learner. Your support will help students improve their academic skills while also rebuilding confidence, motivation and engagement with learning.

Maths and English teaching experience is essential. Tutors with the ability to deliver secondary or GCSE Science are also encouraged to apply.

Most placements offer approximately 10-15 hours of tuition per week per student, generally within school hours. Depending on the referral, tuition may take place at the learner's home, in a community venue or another suitable location.

Students You May Support

Learners may have a variety of additional needs, including:

• Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC/ASD)
• ADHD

• Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
• Previous or ongoing absence from education
• Gaps in subject knowledge
• Difficulties accessing mainstream education

You should be able to create a positive and low-pressure learning environment and adjust your approach according to each student's individual needs.

Your Responsibilities

• Provide individualised tuition to learners from Year 7 through GCSE.
• Deliver Maths and English lessons confidently across the secondary curriculum.
• Assess learning needs and identify areas requiring additional support.
• Plan purposeful lessons based on individual targets and abilities.
• Modify resources and teaching methods to accommodate SEND needs.
• Support learners with EHCP targets and wider educational objectives.
• Assist with GCSE preparation and examination skills where relevant.
• Build positive working relationships with students and their families.
• Encourage confidence, independence and consistent engagement.
• Monitor learning and record progress throughout the placement.
• Share appropriate feedback with parents, carers, schools and professionals.
• Work collaboratively with those involved in the learner's education.

Candidate Profile

We are seeking tutors who can demonstrate:

• Strong secondary Maths and English teaching experience.
• Experience supporting students from Year 7 to GCSE.
• Previous experience working with children or young people with SEN/SEND.
• Ideally, two or more years of relevant SEN experience.
• A good understanding of SEND and differentiated teaching approaches.
• Experience engaging learners who may be anxious, withdrawn or reluctant to participate.
• Patience, empathy and the ability to adapt quickly.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to work independently and professionally.
• Good organisation and lesson-planning skills.
• An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.

Subject Expertise

Essential:

• Maths
• English

Desirable:

• Science

GCSE Science teaching experience would be particularly useful.

Additional Experience

The following would be advantageous:

• QTS, PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification.
• SEN/SEND specialist training or qualifications.
• GCSE and/or A-Level teaching experience.
• Experience working with EHCPs.
• Experience in specialist schools, mainstream education or alternative provision.
• Previous outreach, home tuition or 1-to-1 teaching experience.
• Experience supporting young people experiencing EBSA, school anxiety or prolonged absence.
