Job Requirements/Description

Lab/Glazing Technician / £30,000
Monday to Friday Full-time Flexible working hours

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Glazing Technician / Optical Laboratory Technician to join a successful and growing independent optical business.

The role has been created to strengthen the existing laboratory team and provide additional technical capacity. The successful candidate will play an important role in the day-to-day production of optical orders, with responsibility for ensuring work is completed accurately, efficiently and to a consistently high standard.

This position would suit an experienced Optical Laboratory Technician, but applications are also welcomed from newly qualified Dispensing Opticians (DOs) who have gained good practical exposure to laboratory work, glazing and optical equipment.

The Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of optical laboratory and glazing duties, including:

  • Preparing and glazing ophthalmic lenses into frames
  • Working with a variety of lens types, materials and frame styles
  • Using optical laboratory machinery and equipment safely and accurately
  • Taking accurate measurements and ensuring finished jobs meet specification
  • Checking completed work for quality, accuracy and presentation
  • Identifying and resolving glazing or fitting issues
  • Carrying out adjustments, repairs and remedial work where required
  • Working efficiently to meet production requirements and deadlines
  • Maintaining a clean, organised and safe laboratory environment
  • Following appropriate procedures for handling lenses, frames, machinery and equipment
  • Working closely with colleagues to ensure orders progress smoothly from start to finis

The Ideal Candidate

The business is looking for someone with a practical, hands-on approach who takes pride in producing high-quality work.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous optical laboratory or glazing experience
  • Practical knowledge of lens glazing and fitting
  • Experience using optical laboratory equipment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good hand skills and technical ability
  • A methodical approach to work
  • The ability to identify problems and find practical solutions
  • Good organisation and time-management skills
  • The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a small team
  • A reliable and committed approach to work
  • A willingness to learn new techniques and develop existing skills

A newly qualified Dispensing Optician with good laboratory exposure could be particularly well suited to the position. Experienced Optical Assistants may also be considered where they have substantial hands-on laboratory and glazing experience.

More Important Than a Job Title

The role is not necessarily about finding someone who has spent their entire career working as a Laboratory Technician. The key requirement is the right combination of practical ability, technical understanding, attention to detail and attitude. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a genuine interest in the laboratory side of optics and be comfortable working with their hands, machinery and detailed technical processes. The role would suit someone who wants to develop their technical skills and become an important part of a small, established team.

Working Environment

The successful candidate will be joining a small team where their contribution will have a direct impact on the day-to-day operation of the business. The role offers the opportunity to work closely with experienced colleagues, take ownership of laboratory responsibilities and develop a broad understanding of the complete glazing and production process. The business is experiencing continued growth, creating genuine opportunity for the successful candidate to develop their responsibilities and earning potential over time.

Salary & Progression

Starting salary: £30,000+ (Depending on experience)

There is flexibility for the right candidate, with salary reflecting technical experience, capability and the contribution they can make. A performance-related annual bonus is also available, providing additional earning potential.
