Education Welfare Officer (EWO) To start in East London ASAP

  • Location: Based within East London school with community and home visits as required
  • Salary: £17 - £19 per hour
  • Job Type: Full-time, term-time plus additional weeks as required (flexible arrangements may be considered)

Join our dedicated team as an Education Welfare Officer (EWO), where you will play a crucial role in promoting excellent pupil attendance, reducing persistent absence, and supporting families to overcome barriers to education. This position involves close collaboration with pupils, parents/carers, school staff, and external agencies to ensure all children receive their entitlement to education and achieve positive educational outcomes.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Attendance Management:
    • Monitor, analyse, and report on pupil attendance and punctuality.
    • Identify patterns of absence and implement appropriate intervention strategies.
    • Manage cases of persistent and severe absenteeism.
    • Maintain accurate attendance records and ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
    • Produce attendance reports for school leaders, governors, and external agencies.
  • Family Support:
    • Build positive relationships with pupils and families to encourage improved attendance.
    • Conduct home visits to investigate non-attendance and provide support.
    • Develop attendance action plans and support programmes for identified pupils.
  • Safeguarding and Child Protection:
    • Manage attendance concerns in line with safeguarding procedures.
    • Escalate concerns regarding pupil welfare promptly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • Multi-Agency Working:
    • Liaise with local authorities, social workers, health services, and other external agencies.
    • Coordinate support for vulnerable pupils and families.
  • Legal and Statutory Duties:
    • Support the school's attendance enforcement process in accordance with current legislation.
    • Prepare evidence and documentation for legal intervention where required.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Qualifications:
    • Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent) including English and Mathematics.
    • Relevant qualification in Education Welfare, Safeguarding, Social Care, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience:
    • Experience working with children, young people, and families.
    • Experience managing attendance or welfare cases.
    • Experience of multi-agency partnership working.
  • Knowledge:
    • Understanding of attendance legislation and guidance.
    • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong investigative and problem-solving abilities.
    • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and school management systems

THE SUCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL BE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE WHOLE SCHOOL RECRUITMENT WHICH INCLUDES AN ENHANCED DBS (ON THE UPDATE SEVICE)
